Brazilian man killed in Streatham 'arson attack' named by police - Evening Standard

Description

Police have named the victim of a suspected deadly arson attack in south London.

Brazilian cleaner Basilio Dos Santos Antonio, 49, perished when a blaze broke out at a house that is divided into bedsits in Glenister Park Road, Streatham around 7pm on Sunday February 25.

Mayara Loiola Ataide, 34, and Gevaldo Tavares Dos Santos, 46, have been charged with murder and two counts of arson with intent to endanger life.

The pair appeared at the Old Bailey on March 1 where they were further remanded in custody.

A trial date has been set for January 2 2025.

The victim’s next of kin have been informed and are being supported by family liaison officers.

Detective Chief Inspector Kate Blackburn, who is leading the Metropolitan Police investigation, said: “Basilio, who was originally from Brazil, had been in the UK for a number of years and worked as a cleaner.

“Our thoughts are with his family and friends as they continue to come to terms with their loss.”

An investigation was launched after police were called to a multi-occupancy house by London Fire Brigade.

Police appealed to anyone in the area who saw activity around 6.45pm in Glenister Park Road, between Drakewood Road and Streatham Vale, to come forward.

DCI Blackburn said at the time: “We understand that such a tragic incident will cause concern among the wider community, however we believe that this is an isolated incident.”
