LEADING CAMPAIGNERS say they are “appalled” at the Independent Office for Police Conduct’s (IOPC) decision to formally drop gross misconduct proceedings against Metropolitan Police firearms officer who killed Chris Kaba.

The IOPC have today announced that they have decided to formally drop gross misconduct proceedings against the Met Police firearms officer Martyn Blake.

Chris, a 24 year old Black man, was fatally shot by Blake, on 5 September 2022 in Streatham, London.

Chris was unarmed.

THE FAMILY of Chris Kaba have called for the inquest into their son’s death to resume as soon as possible.

The call follows the announcement from the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), that due to changes to the law on police disciplinary cases, Metropolitan Police marksmen Sgt Martyn Blake will no longer face misconduct proceedings over the fatal shooting of Mr Kaba.

The 24-year-old was unarmed and police officers did not know who he was at the time of the shooting on 5 September 2022 in Streatham, London.

THE FAMILY of Chris Kaka are set to hold a vigil this week marking three years since the fatal shooting.

Metropolitan Police firearms officer, Martyn Blake, fatally shot Mr Kaba during a police stop, but was later found not guilty of murder at a high-profile trial at the Old Bailey in October 2024.

Mr Kaba’s family say the vigil will be a space for “reflection, remembrance and solidarity.”

THE INDEPENDENT Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has directed the Met Police to hold a disciplinary hearing for a firearms officer who shot Chris Kaba.

NX121 was unanimously acquitted of the murder of Mr Kaba following an Old Bailey trial in October 2024.

In March 2024, firearms officer NX121 was named as Martyn Blake following a judge’s decision to lift an anonymity order – which prevented his identity from being revealed.

Mr Kaba, 24, died in September 2022 in Streatham, south London, after a single gunshot wound sustained during a Met operation.
