A23 Streatham Hill works

On Monday 21 July 2025, we will start work on a new permanent road layout for the A23 Streatham Hill. It will include protected cycle lanes and dedicated bus lanes in both directions. The new layout will improve bus reliability, and make it easier, safer, and more pleasant for people to walk and cycle in the area.

We are due to finish these works in spring 2027.

Lane restrictions

From Monday 4 August 2025 there will be lane restrictions in both directions on the A23.

These will in place in phases between the junction with Holmewood Road on A23 Brixton Hill and the junction with Sternhold Avenue (B221) on A23 Streatham Hill.

There will also be some changes to how some roads joining the A23 operate.

There will be significant delays to traffic so road journeys in the area will take longer than usual.

From Monday 21 July, there will be some local works, including the set up of a site compound, but the A23 Streatham Hill is expected to operate as normal.

Overnight closures

At times, we will need to close the road overnight. This is so we can safely set up and move traffic management (for example, safety barriers) as needed throughout the project.

The A23 will be closed in both directions between Christchurch Road and Sternhold Avenue between 22:00 and 05:00 the following day on Sunday 3 August and Monday 4 August. There will be signed diversions during these closures.

When further overnight closures are confirmed, we will publish details here nearer the time.

Driving

Journeys on the A23 Streatham Hill and surrounding roads will take longer during these works.

Walk or cycle where possible

If you need to drive or travel by bus:

Parking along the A23 alongside the works will be suspended

Journeys through the Streatham area will take longer.

If your route would normally take you on the A23 Streatham Hill, but you don't need to stop in the area, reroute your journey.
