Declan George-Candiani, 26, from Streatham, was nabbed by counter-terrorism police at Stansted Airport on August 13 last year after he was pulled aside for a routine Schedule 7 stop under anti-terror laws. The brief check turned into a major victory for the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command after analysis of his seized phone revealed downloads of horrific material linked to extreme right-wing terrorist groups. Detectives also found documents which were effectively ‘lone wolf’ attack manuals, containing guides on how to commit terror acts. During a search of his home, police seized an iPad which also contained the shocking material. At the Old Bailey on Friday, the court heard how George-Candiani tried to wriggle out of his crimes by claiming he had a “possessed mindset” and that he’d made a “pact with the devil” to become a “minion.” He told officers he developed an “unhealthy obsession” with a far-right group promoting “traditional Satanism” and that the ideology “overpowered” him in a way he “couldn’t control.” But the prosecution blasted the pathetic defence, arguing that George-Candiani had a clear interest in extreme right-wing ideology and had intentionally accessed and downloaded the killer manuals. He was convicted of two counts of collecting material likely to be useful to a terrorist under the Terrorism Act 2000. He was cleared of two other similar charges. ’Horrific Material’ Commander Dominic Murphy, head of the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command, hailed the power that snared the extremist. ”This is another example of why the schedule 7 stop power in the Terrorism Act legislation is so important in identifying and prosecuting potential terrorists,” he said. ”In this case, analysis of digital devices revealed downloads of some of the most horrific material promoted by extreme right-wing terrorist groups, as well as extremely dangerous material about carrying out attacks and other acts of extreme violence.” The terrifying conviction comes as police ramp up patrols following a recent attack in Manchester. Commander Murphy added: “We know that the public, and particularly those in the Jewish community, will be concerned… There will be an increased police presence across London over the coming days to support and reassure all our communities affected and keep them safe.” George-Candiani will be sentenced at the Old Bailey on November 28. Cops have urged the public to stay alert, but not alarmed. If you see something that doesn’t look or feel right, you can tell a police officer, or call, in confidence, on 0800 789 321.
