Met Police accused of resisting full inquest into Chris Kaba fatal shooting

Lawyers representing the family of Chris Kaba have accused the Metropolitan Police of actively resisting a full inquest into his fatal shooting by an officer in 2022.

Kaba, 24, died in September 2022 after being shot in the head by police marksman Sgt Martyn Blake following a vehicle pursuit in Streatham, south-east London.

Sgt Blake was acquitted of murder at the Old Bailey in October 2024 after maintaining that his use of lethal force was lawful, proportionate and necessary.

During a pre-inquest review at Southwark Coroner's Court, the Kaba family's barrister argued that the criminal trial was not a substitute for an inquest to establish facts and learn lessons.

Senior coroner Dr Julian Morris will decide whether to resume the full inquest into Kaba's death, which had been adjourned since October 2022.
