Death Takes Centre Stage

A close-up of the extraordinary sculptural detail on the Howland Memorial inside St Leonard's Church, Streatham.
The monument commemorates John Howland, who died in 1686, and was erected by his wife Elizabeth.
At its centre, a skull emerges from elaborately carved foliage beneath a classical funerary urn, flanked by two seated cherubs.
The symbolism is unmistakable.
The skull is a memento mori, a reminder that death comes to everyone, regardless of wealth, status or position.
The cherubs, by contrast, introduce ideas of innocence, the soul and the Christian hope of life beyond death.
Together, they express the central message of the memorial: the triumph of life over death.
What makes this particular detail so compelling is the extraordinary juxtaposition of expressions. The cherubs gaze upwards and outwards, while the skull confronts us directly with its hollow eyes and open mouth.
There is something almost mischievous about the composition, as though Death has interrupted a perfectly respectable gathering of angels.
More than three centuries after its creation, the sculptor's message remains remarkably effective.
Life may be fleeting, but Death seems determined to have the last grin.
