The interior had been reconstructed on at least two occasions, after war damage in 1955 and as a bowling alley in 1961 - which completely destroyed the interior theatre. Opened in March 1932 as the Gaumont Palace Theatre, designed by Charles Nicholas & J E Dixon-Smith, with 2,381 seats in stalls and circle, a full stage and back-stage was included. Closed in 1944 due to bomb damage and not repaired until 1955 when an entirely new-look auditorium was created by T P Bennett & Son, now with 1,873 seats in stalls and circle levels. After the bowling alley closed in 2008, the auditorium was demolished in 2014 and the facade was incorporated into a new, largely residential, development known as Gaumont Place.
