River Graveney

The River Graveney, a tributary of the Wandle, runs for 5.9 miles through Streatham and Tooting -- mostly underground, and here confined to a concrete channel by Streatham Road.

It takes its name from the De Gravenel family, landowners in the area during the 12th and 13th centuries, and gave its name in turn to the ancient manor of Tooting Graveney, recorded in the Domesday Book.

Never powerful enough to drive a mill, it served more modestly as irrigation and drainage.
