It is, in fact, a lake - formed originally by gravel digging and landscaped as an ornamental feature in 1895, when Tooting Bec Common was already two decades into its life as protected public land. Anglers fish it for perch, carp and gudgeon. Mute swans and Egyptian geese make their indifference to visitors clear. At some point in the past, people sailed model boats here; that seems to have quietly lapsed. The red-eared terrapins, stranded exotics that have made it their home, are considerably harder to spot.
