The A23 in Streatham Hill, south London, is going to have a £9.5 million refurbishment, which will see pedestrian crossings built, a protected cycle lane added and bus lanes improved. The improvements will see the old central reservation removed across the 0.6-mile stretch between the junctions of Holmewood Road on Brixton Hill and Sternhold Avenue junction on Streatham Hill. Sue, 70, and Bill Aylott. 71, moved into their house in Streatham in 1979 bringing up their two children and recently celebrating their Golden wedding anniversary at what they thought was their forever home. But just before Christmas the couple, who are in their seventies, received a notification from Lambeth Council that they would have to move out. The collision on Surrey Quays Road, near Canada Water, early yesterday evening triggered a major emergency response, with police, paramedics and an air ambulance scrambled to the scene. The boy, whose age has not yet been confirmed, was tended to at the scene before being rushed to a major trauma centre in a critical condition. His family has been informed. Thames Water has said they have had to close their distribution hub in Sainsbury’s car park in Lower Sydenham after ‘security incidents’ as desperate customers foughtfor their share. The 118 bus, which ran from Morden to Brixton, was axed by Transport for London (TfL) despite being in service since November 1936. The bus was known among south Londoners for its internal blue lighting and made its last ever journey in the early hours of Satruday morning. The historic route fell victim to a TfL reshuffle of bus services in south London aimed at cutting overlapping bus services to better meet passenger demand. It was announced last month that Homebase had collapsed into administration. But CDS Superstores, the parent company of The Range and Wilko, were able to salvage 70 of the popular retailer’s store. Now, they have outlined plans to keep those stores in business. The new owners are planning to transform the Homebase stores into The Range Superstores, with revamped branches set to open in Pollokshaws, Glasgow, Christchurch, Bournemouth and Birmingham on January 17, 2025. TfL revealed plans last month to relocate the junction in Streatham, south London, some yards further south across the A23, a busy dual carriageway with a central reservation. However, local leaders have criticised the plan, saying the £650,000 could be better spent on something else. It comes after the area between Woodbourne Avenue and Gracefield Gardens has become a hotspot for crashes between pedestrians and drivers. One dead after fight breaks out inside house Submitted by daniel on Sun, 07/04/2024 - 08:00 Picture Image A man has died after reports of an ‘altercation’ in London with an urgent investigation into what happened. The man, in his fifties, was found unresponsive by police who were called at around 2.26pm on Friday to a house in Streatham. He was taken to hospital in a critical condition but could not be saved. A 38-year-old man was arrested at the scene in Fernwood Avenue and has since been bailed pending further enquiries.
