No fewer than 23 films are available for a range of audiences from September 14 to 28, all free to watch and completely volunteer powered. The festival will open with an outdoor screening of Wonka on September 14. The Free Film festival boasts blockbusters such as Oscar winning Barbie – for which dress-up is encouraged – a 30th anniversary screening of Leon, big hits such as Monster’s Inc, and the quirky Marcel The Shell With Shoes On. Starting on Thursday, the London Mural Festival will feature street art at seven different housing estates in Lambeth, created by both homegrown and international artists. Estates taking part, based across Oval, Clapham, Brixton, Streatham Hill and West Norwood, include the South Lambeth Estate, the Fenwick Estate, the Brighton Terrace Estate, the Streatham Hill Estate, the Notre Dame Estate, the Gaskell Street Estate and the Woodvale Estate. Council’s licensing scheme hopes to tackle rogue landlords Submitted by daniel on Tue, 03/09/2024 - 08:00 Picture Image A council has introduced a new licensing scheme in a bid to crack down on rogue landlords. From September 2, landlords in Lambeth will need a licence to legally let any property to a single-family household in Knights Hill, Streatham Common and Vale, Streatham Hill East and Streatham St Leonards. Each license will cost £923, to cover the costs of both administering and maintaining. The scheme, approved by Lambeth’s cabinet in May, hopes to improve property conditions and tackle rogue landlords. The building at 101 Streatham High Road has been vacant since 2015 when the local police station relocated to a building further down the street. Now Everitt Road Properties has applied to Lambeth council to turn the former cop shop, built in 1912, into a hotel and café. As part of the development, a rear extension would be added to the building, as well as a mansard roof. When someone suffers a cardiac arrest – which is when the heart stops beating – the use of a defibrillator gives them the best chance of surviving. But new analysis from the LAS shows 21 neighbourhoods where there is no access to a defibrillator, and 129 neighbourhoods where there is limited access for the population nearby. Election 2024 results: Labour sweep to victory across Lambeth with three new seats Submitted by daniel on Fri, 05/07/2024 - 08:00 Picture Image Labour has swept to victory across Lambeth, securing all constituencies including three new seats and a Lambeth by-election. Dominic Armstrong, the party’s candidate for Streatham Common and Vale, finished in first place, picking up 2,796 votes. The by-election, which took place on the same day as the general election, was called after former Labour councillor Henna Shah resigned. Green Party candidate Duncan Eastoe was second with 1,354 votes and Conservative Party candidate Lachlan Rurlander was third with 918 votes. Old Streatham Hill Theatre set for its new life as a church – but does it have permission? Streatham Hill Theatre has, since 1994, enjoyed Grade II listed building status and has a proud past, but succumbed to financial pressures decades ago to become a bingo hall until 2017.
