The new Prime Minister is set to unveil his Cabinet

Andy Burnham is unveiling his Cabinet after being sworn in as Prime Minister.

The Makerfield MP had been tight-lipped about his selections, will help set out the direction of his Government. On Friday the former Greater Manchester Mayor insisted no decisions had been made about his top team, but rumours continue to swirl over who will end up in the great offices of state.

It's believed Mr Burnham has been weighing up either Energy Secretary Ed Miliband or Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood to be chancellor with Rachel Reeves widely expected to leave the post.

Earlier Lord James Timpson became the first minister to resign from government ahead of Mr Burnham’s Cabinet reshuffle. The former chief executive of Wythenshawe-based Timpson Group was appointed as prisons minister in July 2024.

MP Steve Reed also stood down as Housing Minister. In a resignation letter the MP for Streatham and Croydon North said Sir Keir Starmer had showed loyalty to him by appointing him to the Cabinet, adding: I make no apology for returning that honour."

Lord Patrick Vallance, whose ministerial portfolio includes science, innovation, research and nuclear, followed Lord Timpson in resigning. He served across both the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology and the Ed Miliband-led Department for Energy Security and Net Zero during Sir Keir’s premiership.

Confirmed outs

Cabinet

Rachel Reeves has said she will no longer be Chancellor, as she wished her successor in No 11 “the very best of luck” in a post on social media.

Deputy prime minister David Lammy said he would continue to support the Government “from the backbenches”, and wished Andy Burnham “every success”.

Steve Reed revealed he is no longer housing secretary, in a letter to Andy Burnham expressing disappointment about the decision.

Business and trade secretary Peter Kyle is understood to have been sacked, according to Sky's political editor Beth Rigby, who said he was a 'close ally' of Starmer.

Attorney general Lord Richard Hermer has also confirmed he is leaving the Cabinet but has vowed to support Burnham's government 'from the backbenches'.

Secretary for science, innovation and technology Liz Kendall announced her departure from the Cabinet on X, saying she was 'very grateful' to Starmer for the opportunity.

Secretary of State for Wales, Jo Stevens, has also departed her post, writing that 'Keir leaves the country in a much better place than he found it'.

Darren Jones, who served as Chief Secretary to Sir Keir Starmer, has been told he will not be part of Burnham's cabinet.

Hilary Benn is leaving his role as secretary of state for Northern Ireland, saying Prime Minister Andy Burnham would have his support from the backbenches.

Nick Thomas-Symonds is out as paymaster general and Cabinet Office minister, saying he is returning to the backbenches.
