Two Hospitalised Following Streatham Scaffolding Collapse - simian-risk.com
Description

A scaffolding collapse in Streatham, South London, has raised further concerns about the importance of scaffolding safety, particularly during periods of severe weather.

The incident happened on Sunday 25 October 2026, when scaffolding collapsed onto Streatham High Road during a period of strong winds. Two pedestrians became trapped beneath the fallen structure and were later taken to hospital. According to the London Fire Brigade, emergency services received their first call at approximately 1:31pm. Fire crews from Tooting, Lewisham, West Norwood and surrounding stations attended the scene, while the London Ambulance Service treated both individuals before transporting them to hospital. Their injuries were understood not to be serious.

The incident also led to the closure of part of Streatham High Road while emergency services worked to make the area safe. Although the exact cause of the collapse has not been officially confirmed, the incident occurred during severe weather associated with Storm Boelo, which brought strong winds and widespread disruption across parts of the UK.

The Importance of Scaffolding Safety During Severe Weather

Scaffolding is an essential part of construction and maintenance work, providing safe access to buildings and structures at height. However, it is important to recognise how changing weather conditions can affect its stability and safety. Strong winds can place additional pressure on scaffolding, particularly where sheeting, netting or other materials are attached. These can increase the surface area exposed to the wind, potentially placing additional loads on the structure. This is why weather conditions should always be considered as part of effective site management and scaffolding safety procedures. Following periods of strong winds or severe weather, scaffolding should be checked by a competent person before being used again. Any concerns about stability, damaged components or loose fittings should be addressed before work continues.

Why Regular Scaffold Inspections Matter

Regular scaffold inspections play an important role in helping to identify potential problems before they become more serious.

Checks should consider the overall condition and stability of the structure, including:

Structural stability: Ensuring the scaffold remains secure and has not been affected by adverse weather.

Bracing and ties: Checking that essential components remain correctly fitted and secure.

Boards and fittings: Identifying damaged, loose or displaced components.

Sheeting and netting: Checking that these remain secure and have not been affected by strong winds.

Ground conditions: Making sure the scaffold foundations and supporting surfaces remain stable.

Inspections should also take place following events that could affect the safety of the scaffold, including adverse weather conditions.

Keeping Scaffolding Standards High

Incidents such as this are an important reminder that scaffolding safety must remain a priority throughout every stage of a project. Good planning, competent supervision, appropriate training and regular inspections all contribute to creating safer working environments for scaffolders, construction workers and members of the public.

At SIMIAN, we understand the importance of maintaining high standards across the scaffolding industry. Through specialist training and professional development, we support individuals and businesses in building the knowledge and skills needed to work safely and responsibly. Scaffolding safety is everyone’s responsibility. Taking the right precautions, recognising potential risks and ensuring structures are properly maintained can make a real difference.
