Green Party Candidate Suspended Amid Antisemitism Allegations Wins Election in Lambeth

In a recent election in the Streatham St Leonard’s ward, Ali emerged victorious, alongside two incumbent members of the Green Party. However, the celebrations were marred by controversy following allegations of antisemitic social media posts attributed to her. In response to these claims, the Lambeth Green Party issued a strong statement on its website, emphasizing its opposition to all forms of racism, including antisemitism, and expressing their support for the Jewish community.

The party categorically condemned the alleged posts, asserting that they do not align with the party’s values. Consequently, Ali has been suspended pending an investigation into the matter. Despite her suspension, she was listed as a Green Party candidate on ballot papers due to electoral law stipulations that prevent changes to nominations during the voting period.

In a statement to the BBC, Ali expressed her gratitude for the trust placed in her by the residents of St Leonard’s ward, underscoring her two decades of dedicated charity work and community service as a testament to her character and commitment. She refuted the claims against her, stating that statements she would never endorse have been falsely attributed to her. Addressing constituents who might have concerns, she encouraged them to consider her work and values instead of the accusations.

Earlier in the year, two other Green Party candidates, aged 54 and 56, were arrested in connection with similar allegations of antisemitic posts. While one of these women has reportedly been suspended from the party, a broader wave of suspensions affected several Green Party candidates during the electoral campaign due to purported antisemitic remarks on social media. The Green Party confirmed that many of those suspended did not succeed in their electoral bids.
