‘Long rebuilding journey’: Fires still burning as Victoria takes stock

Toby Heydon is confident his community will heal after bushfires ripped through the Victorian towns of Ravenswood and Harcourt, 130 kilometres north-west of Melbourne, where locals raised $100,000 within 24 hours to help families and businesses.

“We had a very well-attended community meeting on Saturday and people were saying, ‘I’ve got room in my paddock for two horses, I can look after cats, I’ve got a space with two extra bedrooms’,” said Heydon, the mayor of Mount Alexander Shire.
