TfL proposes Superloop bus between Eltham and Clapham

Transport for London (TfL) has said that they are exploring the option of a new express bus service between Clapham Junction and Eltham station.

It comes as the Superloop network continues to expand, with ten routes already in operation and a further three planned this year.

Now, transport bosses have said that they will launch consultations on another three routes later this year, including a bus between Clapham and Eltham, designated SL15.

Although TfL has not confirmed where this route would stop, the London Mayor has previously released a map showing where further routes could go.

This shows stops in Lee, Tulse Hill and Streatham – although Clapham is not marked on the map, so it is clear that these initial plans are subject to change.

The other new routes revealed by TfL are north of the river. SL13 would travel between Ealing Broadway and Hendon, and SL14 between Stratford and Chingford.

TfL has also confirmed that BL1, a Superloop bus that will mirror the route of the proposed Bakerloo line extension between Elephant & Castle and Lewisham, will start services in the autumn.

Consultations have also closed on proposals for SL11 between Abbey Wood and North Greenwich, and SL12 between Rainham and Gants Hill, suggesting these routes will also be in operation in the near future.

Other routes under consideration by Sadiq Khan include a Kingston to Ealing Broadway bus and a Richmond to Wimbledon bus.

TfL claims that Superloop buses have increased ridership in the areas they serve.

Since the first express bus was launched in June 2023, the average increase in passengers on all Superloop corridors, including parallel routes, is 11 per cent, which is nine per cent higher than the network average.

Transport bosses say this shows that the Superloop provides “quicker journey times to key town centres, making sustainable bus travel a more popular option for people in outer London”.
