Final major construction phrase on A23 Streatham Hill to begin on 1 September – Highways News

Work on the next phase of improvements on the A23 Streatham Hill will begin in September, with temporary traffic restrictions in place while the final major elements of the scheme are completed. The A23 through Streatham has a poor safety record, with a number of collisions resulting in serious injuries and even deaths. These improvements will make it easier to cross busy roads, provide protected space for people cycling and deliver more reliable bus journeys through the area, making the streets of Streatham safer.

Construction began last year, and TfL is currently completing phase four of the project on the northbound section between Sternhold Avenue and the A205 Christchurch Road/Streatham Place junction. This phase has included installing sections of protected cycle lane, new traffic islands and signalised pedestrian crossings, alongside pavement improvements and drainage measures including new planting.

From Tuesday 1 September, phase five of the project will begin on the section between Christchurch Road and Holmewood Road. This final major stage of work will include upgrading signalised crossings, installing additional traffic islands, improving pavements and completing the new cycle track.

Lane restrictions will be in place throughout September. This will be followed by approximately four weeks of temporary traffic signals until late October, before lane restrictions return until mid-November. Final resurfacing work on Brixton Hill and across the A205 junction will then take place in late November. Once resurfacing has been completed, the scheme will be substantially finished and all traffic management will be removed from the carriageway. The cycle track is expected to open in early December once signage has been installed.

Local residents and businesses will receive detailed information before work begins, including updates on project progress, upcoming construction activity and any temporary changes required during the works, such as bus stop relocations.

“We’re pleased to be entering the final major phase of our work to transform the A23 through Streatham Hill, creating safer crossings, protected cycling facilities and more reliable bus journeys for the thousands of people who travel through the area every day. The scheme will also help support residents and local businesses by creating a more attractive high street, with wider pavements, new planting, trees and seating that will make it easier and more pleasant for people to spend time in the area.

“We know these works, alongside SGN’s gas main replacement programme, will cause disruption and we’re working closely with our partners to coordinate activity and minimise impacts wherever possible. We’d like to thank local residents, businesses and customers for their continued patience while we complete these vital improvements.”

Separately to TfL’s scheme, Southern Gas Networks (SGN) is working to replace a gas main in poor condition on Brixton Hill. This work started on Tuesday 21 July and will continue until Sunday 30 August. TfL is working closely with SGN to coordinate activities and reduce disruption wherever possible.

Roads in the area are expected to be particularly busy while both programmes of work are taking place, and vehicle journey times are likely to be significantly affected. Customers travelling locally are encouraged to walk or cycle where possible, while those travelling through the area should consider alternative routes.
