Free things to do in London this week.

Looking for more free things to do in London? Here are 102 of em! We've also compiled this epic map of free stuff in London, and have a helpful guide to where to see art in London for free, and where you can catch cheap and free comedy.

Keep the kids entertained during half term

School holidays aren't cheap, but they needn't break the bank, either. Our guide to things to do in London in October half term has plenty of ways to keep kids of all ages entertained, and includes a whole section on free events and activities. Take them to a nature roadshow, hunt out their favourite film characters or get lost in a maze.

Admire artworks by Ukrainians living abroad

While many of us are lucky to have a home that serves as an anchor in our lives, some people either don't know if they'll ever return to their home, or are otherwise already coming to terms with the fact it's been destroyed. Sense of Home: Ukrainian Contemporary Artists Exhibition at Heatherleys School of Fine Art in Chelsea features works by Ukrainian artists living in the UK and elsewhere, which question: What does home mean? Is home a reflection of personal history and memory, or can it take shape in unfamiliar surroundings? and Can home be rooted in the presence of loved ones, existing wherever they are?

Take part in a free family singalong

London Youth Choirs hold a free family singing event in Ealing on Tuesday. Sign up to join in with a morning of songs suitable for children aged 6-11 (younger siblings welcome too, accompanied by grown-ups). Free soft drinks, biscuits, cake and fruit are provided during the break.

Escape to the Caribbean without leaving London

British Airways brings a Caribbean-themed pop-up to Battersea Power Station. The free-entry 'Winter Sun' installation is set beneath a glowing 'sun' and is open to everyone. Each day, a different island (Turks & Caicos, Barbados, St Lucia, Grenada, Tobago and St Kitts) takes centre stage, with live music performances and DJs, and food and drink inspired by that particular island. Kick back on a sun lounger, snap a selfie at the photo spot and enter a competition to win a seven-night Caribbean holiday.

Claim your free pint and pizza

BOX Sports Bar & Kitchen opens its new Piccadilly site, located at 21-23 Shaftesbury Avenue, and is dishing out free beer and pizza to celebrate. 400 free pints of Budvar and 400 free slices of pizza (choose from classic margherita, double pepperoni or karaage chicken) are available on a first come, first served basis from 5.30pm on Wednesday.

View Europe's leading motoring art exhibition

Claiming to be "Europe's leading motor art exhibition", The Art of Motoring roars into town, parking up at Iconic Images Gallery on Waterloo Place (Pall Mall). Works by 32 British artists are available to view for free, spanning photo-realism to abstract, using materials including oils, watercolours laser cut aluminium sheet and carbon fibre — and all are for sale. It's curated by Andrew Marriott of Pitlane Productions and Rupert Whyte of Historic Car Art in association with the Royal Automobile Club, and is a precursor to the annual Veteran Car Run (below).

Delve into Islington's food and drink history

The Islington Archives holds a free drop-in session on Thursday, where you can get a closer look at some of the objects from its collection relating to the area's food and drink history.

Menus, reviews, photographs and even a handwritten recipe book dating to 1872 all feature, telling the story of an area which was once home to verdant fields of crops in the north, with a strong culture of street markets and a dining scene to the south.

Discover why our oceans are so important

Professor Helen Czerski gives Thursday's free Gresham College lecture, diving into the importance of the ocean, including its internal anatomy, how the components move, and how this engine has directly influenced our history and culture. Watch in person at Barnard's Inn Hall (Holborn), or online via livestream.

Also from Gresham College this week, Professor Milton Mermikides discusses whether music exists in the animal kingdom, and what it might sound like (free, 29 October).

Catch a free Halloween film screening

The Deptford Lounge hosts a free, adults-only screening of a cult Halloween film on Thursday evening, welcoming back the Films in the Foyer screenings for the winter. The exact film isn't announced online ahead of time — though we're told it's a "lesser-known film from a legendary horror director not currently available on streaming". Sign up to the Lewisham Libraries mailing list for full details.

Free popcorn is provided, though you're welcome to bring your own snacks too.

Get your spook on at a Halloween dog parade

Head to Chelsea on Saturday to see dogs dressed up in their finest Halloween costumes showing them off in a parade. It's free to watch (sadly, places for your dog to take part have sold out), beginning at Chelsea Theatre and making its way to Sloane Square.

See vintage vehicles parading through London's streets

As mentioned earlier, the annual London to Brighton Veteran Car Run sets off from the capital in the early hours of Sunday morning. Over 400 vehicles dating from pre-1905 gather in Hyde Park, departing from 7am, heading southward via either the A3 or A23. Among the London locations they pass through are Brixton, Balham, Streatham, Tooting, Mitcham, Croydon, Purley and Coulsdon. Here's a route guide, with some rough arrival times.

Catch a last glimpse of Frieze Sculpture 2025

If you can squeeze in an autumn stroll this week, we suggest heading to the south-east corner of Regent's Park (near Regent's Park and Great Portland Street stations) to explore this year's free Frieze Sculpture Trail before it's removed. This year's crop, in our opinion, is the most diverse and playful in a long time — something that adults and children can enjoy together, with plenty of space for little ones to run around and let off steam.

Until 2 November.
