Massive housing development set to engulf the Crown & Sceptre pub in Streatham - Brixton Buzz
Description

A huge proposed development around the Crown & Sceptre pub in Streatham looks set to both completely change the character of the pub and mark the death knoll for its popular late Latino nights.

A planning application has gone in for the “refurbishment and extension to the Public House” which includes the demolition of the buildings at 1A and 3 Streatham Place and the erection of a 5-storey building with a basement to provide co-living accommodation comprising 117 units.

A poster on Crown &n Sceptre discussion thread observed:

It is very much worth noting that this is not a simple “refurbishment” of the C&S. It’s façade retention only.

The whole interior, walls and floors will be demolished and a new, smaller building will replace them. No continuity.

Another poster commented:

Also important to note that the “retained” pub building is likely to be a fake above the faience Truman’s facade at ground floor.

The bay windows gain an extra storey in height and the cornice is moved up a storey higher then that to provide some “lipstick on the gorilla”.

No evidence the structure of current pub building could support that.

What future for the pub?

In recent years, the Crown & Sceptre has became hugely popular with the local Latino community and is one of the very few place left in the neighbourhood where people can drink and dance after midnight on weekends.

If this scheme is approved, we can’t imagine how these nights could survive with so many residential units crammed all around a venue that would be dramatically reduced in size.

How to object

Normally you should be able to view the planning documents on Lambeth’s planning portal and lodge your objection there, but the page keeps disappearing,

When we were writing this article (at 9.20pm, 11th June), the page suddenly disappeared, and now continues to display the error message below. And this is something that has been going on for some time.

We’ve written to Scott Ainslie, Lambeth’s Cabinet Member for Planning and Development, and asked him to look into this as matter of urgency.

Many feel that this development will be a hammer blow to the local community and it’s vital that they should be given an opportunity to register their objections.

The case reference is 26/01394/FUL and the address is The Crown And Sceptre Streatham Hill & 1A And 3 Streatham Place London SW2.
