Next phase of A23 Streatham Hill improvement work set to begin at the end of the month - London Post
Description

Work on the next phase of improvements on the A23 Streatham Hill will begin at the end of the month, with temporary traffic restrictions in place while the scheme is delivered.

From Monday 29 June, phase four of the project will see the construction of new central islands as part of a wider transformation of the road. These will provide safer waiting areas for pedestrians crossing the road and help separate traffic flows. The improvements will include protected cycle lanes, new pedestrian crossings and continuous bus lanes, designed to reduce road danger and make it safer and easier for people to walk, cycle and use public transport.

Overnight closures will be in place between 22:00 on Sunday 28 June and 05:00 on Tuesday 30 June, between Christchurch Road and Sternhold Avenue. This will take place across two separate overnight closures: from 22:00 on Sunday 28 June to 05:00 on Monday 29 June, and from 22:00 on Monday 29 June to 05:00 on Tuesday 30 June. The first closure will affect the southern section of the scheme (Sternhold Avenue to Telford Avenue), while the second closure will cover the northern section (Telford Avenue to Christchurch Road). These closures are taking place during the summer period when traffic levels are normally lower, and they’ve been scheduled to avoid other major roadworks where possible. The plan aims to minimise disruption to users as much as possible.

From 05:00 on Monday 29 June until August 2026, traffic will be restricted to one lane in each direction. Daytime works for this phase are expected to complete by 9 August, followed by a period of overnight resurfacing works later in August. People travelling in the area are being advised to plan ahead and allow more time for their journeys. There will also be temporary changes including bus stop relocations, side road closures, pedestrian diversions and parking suspensions. TfL is encouraging people to walk, cycle or use public transport during this time and for drivers to consider alternative routes.

London’s Walking and Cycling Commissioner, Will Norman, said: “The A23 has a poor safety record, and has seen a high number of collisions in recent years, which have sadly led to injuries and even people losing their lives. These improvements to cycle lanes, bus lanes and crossings will make the area safer for everyone and help us move towards our goal of eliminating deaths and serious injuries from London’s roads.”

Julie Lewington, TfL’s Head of Programme Delivery, said: “We’re making important progress on transforming the A23 in Streatham Hill to make it safer for everyone travelling through the area. This next phase of work is a key step in delivering new pedestrian crossings, protected space for cycling and more reliable bus journeys.

“While we have done everything we can to mitigate it, we know this work will cause disruption, particularly while traffic is reduced to one lane in each direction, and we’re asking people to plan ahead and allow extra time for their journeys.”

The improvements form part of TfL’s plans to make the A23 safer. The road has seen 72 collisions in the three years to October 2024, with 75 people injured, and safety improvements are a key priority. TfL will monitor traffic conditions closely throughout the works and make adjustments where possible, including changes to traffic signal timings to help manage congestion and support bus reliability.

The full programme of work is expected to be completed in spring 2027.

Separately to TfL’s scheme, Southern Gas Networks (SGN) is looking to undertake work on a gas main that is in poor condition located within Brixton Hill. By doing the works together this will mean the wider area will be disrupted over a shorter period of time. During this period roads will be very busy. TfL is working with SGN to coordinate works and to minimise disruption as much as possible. Work is expected to commence this summer. From September 2026, TfL will begin the final phase of work, to the north of the A205 junction, on A23 Brixton Hill.

TfL is working closely with Lambeth Council and local stakeholders to keep people informed throughout the work, including regular updates, on street signage and the latest travel advice available online. More information and the latest travel advice is available at: tfl.gov.uk/streatham-hill-works
