Description

The Rabbit Hole, formerly known as The Greyhound, is up for sale for £2.5 million.

Located on Greyhound Lane, Streatham, the pub is a landmark in the area, noted for its distinctive frontage and prime position opposite Streatham Common.

The property dates back to 1930, when it was rebuilt for publican Charles Walter Hoye, complete with landscaped gardens that were marketed as "Streatham’s Finest Garden Rendezvous".

However, the site has a much older history.

It was first documented as the Greyhound Inn in around 1730, serving the then largely rural Streatham Common area.

In 1744, it was described as a "public house which is the common rendezvous for all manner of wickedness".

In 1871, the earlier building was demolished and replaced by a large Victorian inn, designed or commissioned by Edwin Janes.

Janes added a prominent statue of a seated greyhound above the main entrance, making it a well-known local landmark for over 60 years.

The current structure stands on a 0.4-acre plot and includes open plan bar and dining areas, which can cater for between 110 and 150 people.

It also boasts a large beer garden, which can accommodate more than 200 people.

The property also includes a 12-bedroom accommodation, making it suitable for continued use or mixed residential and hospitality use.

In 2017, the pub was rebranded as The Rabbit Hole by its then-current operators, who gave it an Alice in Wonderland-style makeover.

The change was limited to the name and décor, with the building itself remaining the same.

The pub's address remains 151-153 Greyhound Lane, SW16 5NJ, directly opposite Streatham Common and by Streatham station.

The pub operated for a time as the Greyhound Brewery in the 1980s and 1990s, producing beers such as Greyhound Bitter, Streatham Strong, Streatham Dynamite, and an "XXX Pedigree Mild".

This was noted locally as possibly the only mild brewed in London at that time.

However, by May 2025, it was marked "closed long term", with the future of the building uncertain.

The sale of The Rabbit Hole marks a new chapter in the history of this longstanding establishment.

The property listing states that it is suitable for continued use as a pub or for mixed residential and hospitality use.

The Rabbit Hole stands in a vibrant and diverse district in South London, within the London Borough of Lambeth.

Once a fashionable retreat for wealthy Londoners in the 18th and 19th centuries, Streatham has evolved into a lively residential area with a rich cultural mix and a strong sense of community.

It is a popular residence for both families and city professionals, enjoying a strong community spirit, good amenities, and a comfortable balance between city life and suburban calm.

The pub is in a prime location, with nearby amenities including Immanuel and St Andrew Church of England Primary School and St Andrew's Catholic Primary School, both 0.2 miles away.

Streatham station and Streatham Common are both 0.3 miles away.

The sale of The Rabbit Hole presents a unique opportunity for a buyer to own a piece of Streatham's history.

Whether it continues as a pub or takes on a new lease of life, the future of The Rabbit Hole is sure to be watched with interest by the local community.
