Friends and family gather on the green to admire the splashes of colour that paint the sunny spring sky. As the wind picks up, the sky is filled with an extraordinary variety of kites of all shapes and sizes, some homemade, lifting in short bursts before crashing to the ground, others expertly made, soaring in the wind. But kite flying isn’t the only attraction on offer. Food stalls line the common, ranging from sweet treats, to delicious street food, accompanied by exciting live music, adding to the atmosphere. This lovely experience, put together by a hardworking team of volunteers, highlights the need for community within Streatham, and all the good that it brings when people get together and enjoy themselves. Local resident Vicky Singer told me that "It's amazing to see so many people come together, I think it really brings the area to life.” The event also has a long history, after growing from a small local gathering into a well-known annual festival that attracts visitors from across London. Its continued popularity shows the importance of shared outdoor events for the people of Streatham With hundreds of people attending each year, Streatham Kite Day has become a cherished tradition within the local community. When the sun begins to set and kites begin to float to the ground after another year of kite day, it becomes clear that this tradition will not be going anywhere for a while, and that Streatham Common’s Kite Day will always be a soaring success.
