Three residents escaped before firefighters arrived, while a fourth man was treated at the scene. A small blaze damaged part of the kitchen but was brought under control within an hour. The London Fire Brigade said the fire is believed to have been accidental and was caused by cooking being left unattended. The LFB has reminded residents never to leave cooking unattended and to take extra care when cooking with hot oil, warning that even a brief distraction can cause a fire to break out. A brigade spokesperson said: "Cooking should never be left unattended on the hob or grill - if you have to leave the kitchen, turn off the heat." They also urged people to regularly clean hobs, cooker hoods and extractor fans, where grease and fat can build up and ignite. Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters from West Norwood, Mitcham, Peckham and Croydon fire stations attended the scene. Control officers received the first of six emergency calls at 9.13pm and crews had extinguished the fire by 10.09pm.
