Eight killed as typhoon ravages northwestern Philippines

Typhoon Fung-wong has blown out of the northwestern Philippines after setting off floods and landslides, knocking out power to entire provinces, killing at least eight people and displacing more than 1.4 million others.

The typhoon was forecast to head northwest toward Taiwan.

Fung-wong lashed the northern Philippines while the country was still dealing with the devastation wrought by Typhoon Kalmaegi, which left at least 224 people dead in central provinces on Tuesday before pummeling Vietnam, where at least five were killed.

Fung-wong slammed ashore in northeastern Aurora province on Sunday night as a super typhoon with sustained winds of up to 185 km/h and gusts of up to 230 km/h.

The 1800km-wide storm weakened as it raked through mountainous northern provinces and agricultural plains overnight before blowing away from the province of La Union into the South China Sea, according to state forecasters.

Ex French President released from jail

France’s former President Nicolas Sarkozy departed a Paris prison after an appeals court granted him release under judicial supervision.

It comes less than three weeks after he began serving a five-year sentence over a scheme to finance his 2007 election campaign with funds from Libya.

Sarkozy’s black car with tinted windows was seen leaving the prison in the direction of his home in western Paris.

The former president, 70, is banned from leaving the French territory and from being in touch with key people, including co-defendants and witnesses in the case, the court said.

An appeals trial is expected to take place later, possibly in the first half of next year.

Sarkozy became the first former French head of state in modern times to be sent behind bars after his conviction on September 25.

He denies wrongdoing.

He was jailed on October 21 pending appeal, but immediately filed for early release.

Mayor pays tribute after woman and child drown in creek

Greater Dandenong mayor Jim Memeti has paid tribute to a woman and child who tragically died after falling into a creek.

The pair fell into Dandenong Creek near Allan St in Dandenong, in Melbourne’s southeast, about 3.45pm on Monday.

It is understood the 33-year-old woman leapt into the swollen creek after her seven-year-old son was swept away by the strong current yesterday. Both were carried downstream before emergency services arrived at the scene.

Police officers bravely entered the dangerous waters and managed to pull both victims out, but they could not be revived despite desperate efforts.

Local residents say the creek was running much higher than usual, with a particularly strong current that made rescue attempts extremely difficult.

During a council meeting on Monday night, those present observed a minute of silence for the pair.

Memeti read a statement acknowledging the tragedy.

“Our hearts go out to those affected by this awful tragedy including their families, friends and the emergency services who attended,” he said.

Major road re-opens following collision

Kings Rd in Southbank, Melbourne has re-opened following a crash early on Tuesday morning.

A minivan carrying drugs collided with another car following a police pursuit which started in Truganina.

According to the transport department traffic remains congested along Queens Rd and Kings Way and there are delays of up to 20 minutes.

“These delays should ease quickly,” the department said.

“Surrounding roads through Southbank are also busier than usual.”

The driver of the van suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to hospital under police guard.

Two men in the other car were also injured and treated at the scene.

PM says Whitlam sacking was ‘partisan political ambush’

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has launched a blistering attack as the nation marks 50 years since Governer-General John Kerr sacked the Whitlam government.

The PM described the 1975 dismissal a “stern test of Australian democracy”.

“Make no mistake: November 11th 1975, was not a constitutional crisis, it was a partisan political ambush,” he said in a speech at Old Parliament House on Monday evening.

“There was no real precedent, and no legitimate pretext.”

He also announced plans to unveil a statue of Gough Whitlam outside Old Parliament House.

“Australians will be able to stand with Gough, put an arm around the great man’s shoulders, and remind ourselves that if we maintain our enthusiasm, it’s always time,” Albanese said.

Whitlam was dismissed on the front steps of Old Parliament House on November 11, 1975, over a deadlock which could have seen Australia run out of money for crucial services.

Liberal leader Malcolm Fraser had refused to pass Whitlam’s budget, leading to a constitutional crisis Governor-General Sir John Kerr resolved by firing the prime minister and appointing Fraser to the role.

Howard, who was a junior member of the Fraser opposition in the lead-up to the dismissal, said Whitlam didn’t handle the politics of the saga well.

“I think he just assumed that Kerr was his man and would do his bidding, and that was a terrible mistake,” he said.

“He should have worked out for himself that Kerr might exercise the reserve power and dismiss him.”

Australians pause to honour those who died for our country

Millions of Australians will pause to honour those who sacrificed their lives for Australia as Remembrance Day commemorations take place across the country.

It’s been 107 years since the guns fell silent in Europe on the battlefields of World War I and 80 years since the end World War II.

More than 100,000 Australians have died in conflicts and the nation will pause at 11am to pay their respects.

Politicians will gather at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra for a service at 10.45am, including Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Opposition Leader Sussan Ley.

Princess Anne, who is touring Australia, will attend services in Brisbane.

Albanese paid tribute to those who fought for our country in wars past and present.

“We think of every family that has felt both the pride and weight of a loved one who has put on the uniform, and every family that has known the grief that has no ending, only a beginning. And just as we think of all who have served, we think of all who serve now.”

Australian War Memorial director Matt Anderson said Rememberance Day was a day of “deep reflection”.

He hoped people would think about the cost of the peace Australia is granted with now.

“For me personally I’m the father of two children currently serving in the defence force, so it’s a day when I pause and I give thanks to anyone who has ever pulled on this nations uniform and stood in harms way,” Anderson said.

“The war memorial ... with a 103,000 names on its roll of honour, reminds us that their average age is just 23, so for me Rememberance Day is a terribly poingant day.

“It’s an important day and a day for all of us in our busy lives to stop and give thanks for the peace that we currently enjoy and hope we don’t take it for granted.”

Car rams into 7-Eleven after woman detained inside

The doors of a 7-Eleven have been smashed by a car after a woman was detained inside the petrol station.

Just after midnight on Tuesday the woman entered the 7-Eleven on Mickleham Rd in Tullamarine to pay for fuel.

The attendant thought the cash she provided was fake and tried to detain her inside the store until police arrived.

A man behind the wheel of a blue coupe reversed into the doors of the petrol station to free the woman.

The pair then drove off.

Police are investigating and anyone with information or footage of the incident has been urged to come forward.
