Residents in the two wards will head to the polls on Thursday 9th July to select new councillors, after last month’s winning candidates, who both appeared on the ballot for the Greens, did not take up their seats.

Saiqa Ali declined to take up her role as councillor for Streatham St Leonard’s after being suspended by her former party, the Greens, before the elections on 7th May.

The Metropolitan Police have appealed for a woman, believed to have been raped, to come forward after a man was arrested for an incident in Streatham, writes Gabriel Stewart…

Officers believe the woman was attacked after seeing footage of an incident took place on Blairderry Road at 5:30am on Tuesday, 12 May. It was not reported at the time but was captured on CCTV with the police alerted the following day.

A 42-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of rape on Sunday 17 May and has been released on bail with enquiries ongoing.

Two by-elections have been triggered for Streatham St Leonard’s ward and Clapham Park ward within the London Borough of Lambeth.

Joanna Eaves became Clapham Park’s first Green councillor following the May 7 local elections but has had to resign due to ill health. A notice of casual vacancy for Clapham Park ward was published on Lambeth Council’s website on Monday (May 18).

Ms Eaves said: “I’ve always believed that politics is about getting out there and listening to residents, doing things, and helping people.

Three men have been jailed after robbing people’s phones and jewellery at various South London stations.

Elias Angulo Ruiz, 22, Starling Rodriguez Jose, 24 and Juan Martinez Vargas, 22, were imprisoned for a combined twelve years and seven months, at Inner London Crown Court on Friday, November 17.

A fourth defendant, Yoscar Lake, 22, was sentenced to eighteen months in prison suspended for two years.

Police said the group targeted “innocent” commuters at stations including Elephant & Castle, Tulse Hill and Sydenham.

Hideaway in Streatham closed its doors in March 2020 after struggling to foot a £750,000 bill for serious repairs needed to the venue. But the club, which has been dubbed South London’s answer to Soho’s internationally famous jazz bar Ronnie Scott’s, could now reopen in the basement of a new hotel planned on the site of its former home.
