A23 Streatham Hill set for almost two years of TfL roadworks

Description

Transport for London (TfL) is pressing ahead with the project, which will make changes to the road between Sternhold Avenue and Holmewood Road, five years after it was first proposed.

The scheme will see new pedestrian crossings and cycle lanes built, while some parking bays will be removed to clear bus lanes of obstructions.

Transport bosses claim that the changes will make it “easier, safer and more pleasant” for people to walk and cycle in the area.

Work is set to begin on the project this summer, and will continue in five stages for almost two years, until spring 2027.

TfL plans to permanently block off at least two side roads – Ardwell Road and Tierney Road – at their junctions with A23.

Other sides roads will also see access changes, with some becoming exit-only.

New traffic signals will be installed at the Telford Avenue junction outside Brixton bus garage.

The changes are needed due to Streatham Hill’s poor safety record, TfL has claimed.

Between October 2021 and October 2024, 72 crashes took place in the road, which led to 75 people being injured.

Local people have been warned that streets in the surrounding area will be “busier than usual” while roadworks are in place.

TfL has promised to monitor roads during the works and change traffic light signalling to relieve congestion if necessary.

The scheme is being delivered in partnership with Lambeth Council.

Julie Lewington, TfL's head of projects and programmes, said: “We're working to minimise the impact of construction work on local residents and people travelling through the area and would like to thank everyone for their patience during this vital project.

“We are developing comprehensive travel advice around the works which will be communicated to our customers, and we encourage everyone to plan ahead.”

Cllr Rezina Chowdhury, Lamberth Council deputy leader, said: “New pedestrian crossings and safe cycling infrastructure, improved bus lanes, extra trees and greenery will be a huge boost to the high street and great benefit for businesses, residents and road users.”
