'Fallen scaffolding' forces closure of major south London road - London Now
Description

The A23 Streatham High Road is currently blocked between Shrubbery Road and Gleneldon Road, with traffic queueing in the area as a result.

According to traffic monitoring service INRIX, the closure is in place due to an unsafe building, with diversions operating around the affected section of road.

It is being reported on social media that scaffolding fell into the road as Storm Austen hit the capital with near-50mph winds over the weekend.

Emergency services are on the scene and and have closed the road while the situation is assessed.

A number of London bus routes have also been disrupted, including the 45, 50, 57, 109 and 133, while the road remains shut. Motorists have been urged to follow the signed diversion route and allow extra time for their journeys.

Traffic is building on surrounding roads as drivers seek alternative routes.

It is not yet clear how long the closure will remain in place or what issues have been identified with the building.

Drivers are advised to avoid the area where possible and check for the latest travel updates before setting out.
