Description

Two people have been rushed to hospital after being struck by falling scaffolding during Storm Boelo.

The two pedestrians were walking in Streatham High Road at 1.30pm on Sunday during the high winds.

Passersby managed to pull them out of the wreckage of the building site after they became trapped.

Pictures from the scene show the metal poles and coverings in the middle of the road after the collapse.

Neighbours told Metro it was a ‘distressing’ sight to see as people tried to save the injured people from the site.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson: ‘Firefighters are responding to an incident involving collapsed scaffolding on High Road, Streatham.

‘Two people were trapped under the scaffolding and rescued before the Brigade arrived. Both people were taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service.

‘The Brigade’s Control Officers received the first of five calls at 1331 and have mobilised crews from Tooting, Lewisham, West Norwood and surrounding fire stations to the scene.’

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson added: ‘We sent resources to the scene including ambulance crews, an incident response officer and paramedics from our hazardous area response team (HART) to the scene.

‘We treated two patients at the scene and took both of them to a hospital.’

More than 82,000 homes are still without power as Storm Boelo continues to batter the UK.

The Met Office said wind speeds widely reached 60-70mph, affecting areas in an amber warning zone that came into force at 9pm on Saturday.
