Breaking News: ‘Zionism is Racism’ motion passed at Green Party conference - Brixton Buzz
Description

Green Party members backed the motion by 1,022 votes to 813 at the party’s conference in Brighton today. It sets out the party’s opposition to Zionism, which it defines as an ethnonationalist political project, and says anti-Zionism should not be equated with antisemitism.

The policy backs Palestinian liberation, the right of return, the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions campaign, and a full arms embargo on Israel. It also calls for a single democratic state throughout historic Palestine.

In a statement after the vote, a Green Party spokesperson said the debate had been “serious and deeply felt” and that conference had made its decision.

The spokesperson said the party remained committed to equality, justice and human rights, and to opposing racism in all its forms.

The motion has prompted disagreement within the party. Jewish Greens said in an August briefing that their members were divided, with some concerned the motion could make Jewish members feel unwelcome or conflate different understandings of Zionism.

Lambeth Green Party spokesperson Zviko Chihoro confirmed that a statement was being prepared by the local party here in the borough.
